Left Devils Marbles at about 8.30 after a night of wind and
light rain, yes rain not a lot just an odd shower. As no dogs were allowed at
the Marbles Tony and Sue had gone further on to camp and wait for us to catch
up eventually found them down the road about 30ks, had a cuppa then on the road
again. We had a side slight head wind so the going was a bit slow. The country
was lovely and was very enjoyable seeing all the different areas. Around Barrow
Creek the breakaways were brilliant flat tops, then the breakaway into a
gradual slope down to the bottom. Lovely hills and valleys along the way all
looking quite green compared to what we have seen and been through.
There was a distinct lack of both animal and bird life, no
road kill at all, which was surprising as there were signs saying be aware of
cattle and sheep wandering on the road. No Kangaroos either. Stopped at Ti Tree
for the night is only a small town.
Next day was a good run, passed by the Tropic of Capricorn
monument also the highest point monument.
The
Tropic of Capricorn crosses the Stuart Highway 30
kilometres north of town.
There is a monument marking the spot and a parking area.
The Tropic separates the tropic (to the north) and temperate zones. It passes through Rockhampton on the east coast of Queensland.

Twenty
kilometres north of Alice Springs on the Stuart Highway is a marker on the east
side of the road indicating the highest point of the Stuart Highway between
Adelaide and Darwin.
The marker is 1km. north of the Tanami Road turn-off to the west, and is ( 727.2 metres above sea level 2390 ft) .
Alice Springs is 600 metres above sea level

Arriving in Alice Springs we said goodbye to Tony & Sue
as they continued onto Port Augusta to see some relations.
We stayed to check out some of the sights, it came in
absolutely freezing during the day and at night. Visited Simpsons Gap, Standley
Chasm freezing all the time, forgot coats they were still in the van.
