Saturday a lovely sunny 7 degree morning when we set out from
Peterborough heading for Broken Hill.
A haze made the hills look really good, the countryside is
very open and flat with lots of hills in
the distance open plain quite a few sheep that look in good condition, the
crows have difficulty finding nesting places. They have made use of the railway
telegraph poles.
Still green and lots of lush grass with odd puddles of
water and dry creek beds.
We stopped at Mannahill for morning tea a cute little
place.
The closer we got to Broken Hill the more animals and
wildlife we saw. Kangaroos, goats, cattle and horses. There can`t be to many
Foxes, cats, dogs, or dingos as the road kill were still full skeltons with the
skin still intact, could be the dry conditions also.
Broken Hill is a lot bigger than we thought it was, first
stop was the caravan park, were we had lunch, unhooked then headed for the
information centre,we were a bit disappointed with what they had to offer. Most
places were pay, pay, pay not a lot of information.
We were pointed in the direction of “The Big Canvas” it was
set out as an Old Railway Station, with ticket booth, Luggage, and a lot of
memorabilia from the rail days. Old steam trains and passenger carriages
Electric train and carriages, tools Big lathe, gangers trolleys/pushcarts a
very interesting place.
We then took a trip out too Old Silverton. Kath has paper
tole picture which was taken at Silverton. We found the building which is now
an Art Gallery it still has the old Volks wagon out the front.
Checked out the “Mad Max Museum” A brilliant collection of photos taken while
they were making the film. No photos or videos allowed to be taken inside the
shed but outside was fine.
Then off we went to find the old cemetery which covered 40
acreas very old and neglected. But well worth the trip.
Check this out Kathy M….
