10 Cotton Growing 24/4/2014

Thursday a wonderful sleep in meant that the sun was well and truly up by the time we got out of bed.
Pottered around did the house work and cleaned up.

Tony jumped on the ride on mower and now the block has been mowed and looks good.
After lunch headed out for a drive to Wee Waa passing Cotton fields were the farmers are very busy harvesting cotton. Unfortunately they were all a long way off the road so couldn’t get good photos. We came upon a receiving point for the bales of cotton at Merah North.
The trucks came in loaded then this machine with a moving floor and being self-propelled  they literally ran between the bales and the bed of the truck lifting the 5 bales of cotton and transported them to the storage spot. The next truck would come along and the same thing would happen.

There are two types of cotton harvesters one that puts the cotton into a round roll like hay rolls, weighing about 2½ tons. Then one that puts the cotton into a bin then transfers to a field bin where it is compressed into a big rectangle and wrapped these are between 11 to 20 ton. The trucks that cart them have a walking floor to load and unload them.

As you can see we stopped and had a good look and a go in one of the transporters!!

Where in W.A. when wheat is carted there is grain all over the sides of the road, well here it is the same but it is cotton all over the road side.
A very interesting afternoon indeed.
